Why not consider buying a car with the latest active safety technology or more commonly known as “driver assist” features such as automatic blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and emergency braking which help people avoid accidents?

Daniel McGehee, the director of the University of Iowa’s Transportation and Vehicle Safety Research program, stated that there were many reasons why people are unfamiliar with driver assists features. One reason that sticks out the most is that the average vehicle on U.S. roads today averages around 11 years old, plus most new car buyers aren’t familiar with the latest safety technology. “The technology is changing so quickly they don’t have a good understanding,” McGehee told The Associated Press.

Based on these findings from these latest surveys, the National Safety Council and the University of Iowa created a new, helpful website called MyCarDoesWhat.ORG. They created the website to help inform the public about these new safety features. There’s also a very informative You Tube channel that was put together by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

“Statistics have shown that more than 90 percent of crashes involve some kind of driver error,” said Newton of the Auto Alliance. “So automakers continue pioneering and enhancing lots of driver assist systems that can help the driver avoid situations that lead to a crash.”
